In the current state of our world, I believe it is vital to truly be able to understand
everyone’s perspective in order to find a true sense of kindness and compassion. Exploring
this perspective, my current work discusses the idea of sonder. “Sonder” is the realization
that everyone around you, whether you know them or not, has their own complex lives and
emotions. I focus on other people's feelings through portraiture in my oil paintings. Through
this practice, I am pursuing an exploration of empathy; one being able to put themselves in
the shoes of another to understand life through the eyes of others. I urge the viewer to
think about the lives and emotions of the people you see and those around you to foster a
deeper connection to the shared human experience.
